Video: New West fire crews respond to “super-fast” fire

A “quick response” by firefighters helped contain a fire to a dumpster and prevent it from spreading to a nearby building

New Westminster firefighters doused a fire before it was able to spread to a nearby apartment building.

Acting fire Chief Erin Williams said fire crews responded to a report of a structure fire near the 400 block of Ash Street about 8:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19.

“Once on scene, crews determined that the fire was contained to a large dumpster and the contents of a trailer,” he said. “There was no extension to neighbouring buildings due to the fire department’s quick response.”

In an email to the Record, a witness said it appeared that the fire appeared to be spreading quickly, but firefighters were on scene “super fast.”

Williams said It’s under investigation by New Westminster fire and police departments.

Sgt. Justine Thom said New Westminster Police Department patrol officers responded to Monday’s fire, along with New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services.

“A couch, dumpster, utility trailer and some nearby bushes were on fire when crews arrived,” she said. “The fire does appear suspicious, and patrol officers have been on scene collecting evidence.”

Thom said officers did speak with many residents in the area; anyone who has information, dash cam, or CCTV footage, and has yet to speak to officers, is asked to call 604-525-5411.

To reduce risk of fires such as these, Thom said residents who have larger items for disposal can contact City of New Westminster’s engineering operations to arrange pickup.
