Burnaby's Community Centred College for the Retired is looking for volunteer instructors to lead classes for local seniors.

The college, at 6650 Southoaks Cres., a non-profit society that offers courses for seniors.

The college is seeking instructors for art, photography and computer programs for the winter semester, which runs from January to March, or the spring semester, from April till May.

Areas of instruction needed include: Drawing/ sketching, acrylics, advanced water colours, charcoal, photography, Internet and email, Excel and Word. The courses are two hours minimum, once a week for eight weeks.

BOOTS FOR KIDS

The Rotary Club of Burnaby Deer Lake is hoping to keep more children warm and dry this winter with its Boots For Kids campaign.

"What we are doing is supplying brand new boots. We don't want used boots," said Rotary member Janice Froese. "We go into the schools, and we will either measure them or have teachers measure the children's shoe sizes, and then we will go out and buy the boots."

The campaign was started last year by Froese and Doreen George, a Rotary member and the school district's community services coordinator. George used to work at Edmonds, a community school with a high number of refugee children.

Now in its second year, the Boots for Kids initiative will run throughout the winter. Teachers identify students who need boots, and there's no shortage of demand.

"We're working in the community schools, and there's a high number of refugee children, and I guess boots aren't a priority for them, which is sad," said Froese.

As recently as two weeks ago, children were showing up at school in sandals, according to Froese, and many did not have socks, either.

Boots for Kids also disributes toques, scarves and mitts, knitted by local seniors. The Rotarians are also looking for donations of cash, so they can buy boots for the children.

For more information, or to get involved, call Froese at 604-420-0038. Visit www. rotaryburnabydeerlake.org for more information.
