Burnaby's foreshore is already looking cleaner, thanks to a group of volunteers who picked up 56 kilograms of trash and recyclables on Saturday.
The Confederation Park cleanup was one of several events linked to the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, an annual cross-Canada week of people collecting, weighing and cataloging garbage left on shorelines.
The Saturday cleanup, organized by local resident Peter Cech, drew about a dozen volunteers from ISL Engineering and Land Services as well as local families.
Cech said they found some unusual items - about 50 empty spray cans and one rusted-out car door - and surprisingly few cigarette butts but lots of broken glass.
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup runs from Sept. 15 to 23, and there are still opportunities for Burnaby residents to spend a day collecting trash at Deer Lake. To find other cleanup events, go to www. shorelinecleanup.ca.
