The early bird gets to water the lawn, now that annual watering restrictions are in effect.
As of June 1, Burnaby residents can only water lawns from 4 to 9 a.m. – those with even-numbered addresses can only water on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and those with odd-numbered addresses can only water on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
“With this year’s record-low snowpack and unseasonably warm start to the summer season, we encourage all residents and businesses to do the right thing and conserve water whenever possible,” Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore said in a press release.
Businesses and other organizations have even earlier restrictions, according to the release
Non-residential addresses can water lawns between 4 and 9 a.m. on Fridays, however, the rest of the week watering is limited to 1 to 6 a.m. – even-numbered addresses can only water lawns on Monday and Wednesday, and odd-numbered addresses can only water on Tuesday and Thursday.
The restrictions, in place until Sept. 30, are intended to conserve drinking water and reduce water demands during the summer season, according to Metro Vancouver.
Restrictions do not apply to the watering of flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees. Sports fields, school yards, parks, golf courses and turf farms are also exempt in Burnaby.
However, cemetery lawns, municipal ornamental lawns and boulevards are not exempt.
Those with new lawns or those treating lawns with nematodes to control chafer beetles can apply for an exemption. There’s no fee for chafer beetle treatment exemptions, however, new lawn watering exemptions cost $50.
Sprinkling outside of the set days and times can result in a $50 fine.
