Burnaby's water and sewer utility rates are increasing by six per cent each next year.

Burnaby council approved the increases at Monday night's council meeting.

The water rate increase is due to an increase in supply cost of water provided by the Greater Vancouver Water District, according to a report from the city's director of finance, Denise Jorgenson.

The waterworks utility rate increase comes to about $29 more per single-family household in the city, up to $516 from $487 if the charges are paid before March 15, according to the report.

The flat sewer parcel tax will increase by $27 to $486 per single-family household if paid before March 15, according to a second report, and the flat sewer use fee - an additional fee for multi-family dwellings - will increase by $15 to $263.

All utility fee payments made before March 15 include a five per cent discount, so payments made after that date are five per cent more.

The rates increased by the same percentage last year, but are down when compared with the previous four years.

In 2011, Burnaby's waterworks utility rate increased by 11 per cent; in 2010 it was 14 per cent; in 2009 it was 12 per cent, and in 2008 it was 11 per cent, according to the report.

The sewer utility rate increased by 7.5 per cent in 2011; 8.5 per cent in 2010, and nine per cent in 2009, according to the second report from the director of finance.
