Snow may surprise Monday morning commuters in Vancouver.

Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for people in Metro Vancouver, warning that up to 10 cm of snow may fall in the city, and a minimum of 2 cm is expected.

The system is expected to arrive over Vancouver Island this evening and move over the Lower Mainland through the night, bringing with it a dusting (and maybe a bit more for some areas) of snow.

"The snow is expected to taper off or transition to rain mixed with wet snow by noon on Monday," states the federal agency. "As snow levels hover near the surface over some localities, accumulations are likely, especially over higher elevations."

That means commuters into Vancouver Monday, Dec. 6 may have to contend with a snowy drive into the city, especially if you're elevated.

The special weather statement has been issued for much of the region, including the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam and North Vancouver. It's also been issued for the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast. On Vancouver Island it's upgraded to a weather warning with up to 15 cm expected inland.

"Be prepared for changing weather conditions during the morning commute Monday," warns Environment Canada.
