This issue, for our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend, we have some fundraisers lined up. You can do your spring plant shopping or enjoy a burger, while supporting some great local causes. Here's our Top 5 for this weekend.

1 Get eating and drinking at Station Square Pub on Friday, May 11, at the Burger and Beer Night Fundraiser for the B.C. People First Society, a nonprofit advocacy group for people with disabilities. The event runs from 5 till 10 p.m., and $20 will get you a burger (chicken, beef or veggie) and a drink of your choice. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 draw. Proceeds go to the society. The pub is at 4405 Central Blvd., across from Metrotown SkyTrain station.

2 Get investigating local life forms at the Burnaby Lake BioBlitz on Friday and Saturday, when scientists examine what is living at Burnaby Lake Regional Park in a 24-hour period. Participants learn about the biodiversity of this backyard park by releasing ladybugs, pond dipping, searching for bugs, listening for frogs, meeting live animals, making cool crafts and lots more. Visit for just a little while, or explore for the entire event, there will be events happening all the time. 3 Get ready to garden on Saturday, May 12 at the Gilpin Elementary annual plant sale. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5490 Eglinton St. Come early for the best selection of beautiful hanging baskets and bedding plants. All proceeds go to Gilpin parent advisory council.

4 Get moving and grooving on Saturday, May 12 at a special concert at South Burnaby United Church, 7591 Gray Ave. The Halifax Wharf Rats will perform. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music starts at 7: 30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, $5 for children six to 12. Proceeds go to As One That Serves, a men's service club affiliated with the United Church of Canada.

5 Get informed about mental health on Saturday, May 12 at McGill library at a presentation for Mental Health Week. The library branch is at 4595 Albert St., and the event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be an exhibit and information table for the Canadian Mental Health Association and Mood Disorders Association of B.C.

Mental Health Week runs from May 7 to 13, as a national event to promote awareness about mental health. For more information, go to www.mentalhealth week.ca.
