A 30-year-old woman pushing her bike along the train tracks at Cariboo Road near Government Road was hit and killed by a Rocky Mountaineer train on Thursday afternoon.

According to Burnaby Supt. Derren Lench, the incident occurred just before 4: 45 p.m. on Sept. 6 when the woman was hit by the train that was making its run from Kamloops to Vancouver.

"We're still trying to piece together what happened," said Lench. "At this stage of our investigation, it appears to be an unfortunate accident."

Lench said preliminary indications are the train clipped the bicycle and because of that contact, the woman was struck from behind and dragged into path of the moving train.

Police were on scene for more than five hours, as both car and train traffic was affected by the accident.

Police will be looking at whether speed was a factor, as well as whether the train engineer or the deceased woman were distracted.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.
