Women's soccer showcase event set for Burnaby this weekend

This weekend will be an important one for womens soccer in Western Canada.

This weekend will be an important one for womens soccer in Western Canada. The best female soccer stars and college team hopefuls will be showcasing their talent at Burnaby Lake West from April 5 to 8 during the fourth-annual Western Canada Soccer Showcase.

The fields will be heating up with 26 teams competing from across Western Canada and about 30 university teams from across North America, including Queens, McGill, the University of Arizona and Yale.

The annual spring event is designed to give young female players a chance to be noticed by university and college recruiters, upping their chances of scoring an athletic scholarship.

Andrea Neil, Canadas first female nominee for soccer into the Sports Hall of Fame will be speaking Friday night as part of the event, and Chelsea Buckland, a member of the Canadian womens soccer team will be meeting high school players at the fields throughout the weekend.

As part of the weekend soccer bonanza, Girls Can Football is holding a fundraiser on Friday, April 6 at Eastside Marios at the Lonsdale Quay from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The evening will include a silent auction. All funds raised will go to support two girls soccer projects the organization is sponsoring in Nigeria and India.
