‘Yes. This is illegal’: Burnaby police seize seven pounds of drugs in traffic stop

Police say some transportation of cannabis is illegal

Burnaby RCMP seized more than seven pounds of cannabis.

Burnaby RCMP issued a bit of a defensive tweet this week after seizing a big load of drugs during a traffic stop.

The stop was conducted by the Burnaby gang enforcement team after a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign.

“Investigation led to the location and seizure of 3.5 kilograms (7+ lbs) of cannabis,” read the tweet. “The cannabis was not legally obtained, stored or transported. Yes. This is illegal.”

The RCMP then tweeted a link to a federal act covering cannabis to back up their arrest, presumably because many people think all dealings with cannabis are legal.

The arrest follows other shenanigans that relate to traffic stops in Burnaby.

Police in Burnaby caught a number of unlicensed drivers during an enforcement blitz Sunday night.

Burnaby RCMP’s traffic team was out targeting drivers making their way into Burnaby, according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

Over the course of a few hours, they caught 10 without valid licences.

“It still blows my mind, 10 people,” Kalanj said. “And it wasn’t like they spent a 12-hour shift doing this...That’s 10 in Burnaby alone. Think of the rest of the Lower Mainland.”

Kalanj also noted the enforcement was conducted on a Sunday night when there aren’t as many vehicles on the road.

In all, the officers handed out 27 tickets.
