Port Moody police (PMPD) had to call Coquitlam RCMP to help them disperse a group of 150 youth, many of whom were caught illegally drinking in Rocky Point Park.

According to a release, one was arrested after attempting to damage a police vehicle while another refused to cooperate after being pepper-sprayed and robbed in the park.

The disturbance reports were called in around 10 p.m. on Monday (Aug. 23) as it appeared the group was under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicants, PMPD Const. Sam Zacharias explains.

"Drinking in public parks is illegal as per the Liquor Control and Licensing Act," he says.

"Parents should be mindful of their children’s activities and whereabouts – as it seemed to the officers on scene that many parents were unaware of this gathering and illegal activity taking place."

As a result, one youth was seen climbing on top of a police cruiser and tried to damage the vehicle.

They were eventually arrested after attempting to flee on foot.

At the same time, police also responded to a robbery in Rocky Point Park where a youth was pepper-sprayed and robbed.

However, police say they refused medical treatment and did not cooperate with the investigation, to which no suspect was found.

Charges are not being recommended at this time in either incident.

Anyone with more information on a potential disturbance in the community is encouraged to call Port Moody police at 604-461-3456.
