The Simon Fraser University women's wrestling team completed a winning weekend, finishing second at the Oklahoma City Duals last Saturday. The Clan won its quarter-final match against host Lindenwood and their semifinal dual against Oklahoma City before dropping the final to Kings University.The Clan defeated Lindenwood 32-11, came back from a 16-1 deficit to win 25-18 against Oklahoma City before dropping the final to Kings by a 35-9 score.
"Kings University came ready to wrestling in the finals and have a very balanced team," said SFU coach Justin Abdou in a prepared release. "We have some work to do to put ourselves in a position to beat them. The team had a bit of a letdown after beating OCU. Kings got on a roll early on and rode that momentum to a fairly lopsided win."
Simon Fraser jumped out to an early lead against Lindenwood, winning the first five matches of the dual. After a loss at 136 pounds, the Clan rebounded to take the final four matches and the dual, sending the team to the semi-finals.
The semifinal was a closer match as SFU lost the first four matches of the dual. Gina Carpenter got the Clan back on track with a win over Rachel Young and SFU went on to win the final six matches of the dual to earn a spot in the championship.
Darby Huckle got the finals against Kings University started with a win for the Clan at 101 lbs. and Michiko Araki got another win for SFU at 109 lbs.
Justina DiStasio got the Clan's only other victory, going undefeated for throughout the meet, winning all eight of her matches.On Friday, Clan wrestlers competed in three duals, sweeping the day with victories over Northwest Kansas Tech, Oklahoma City and No. 2-ranked Jamestown.
The Clan won convincingly, defeating Kansas Tech 45-1, Oklahoma City Blue 35-1 and Jamestown 48-0.
Simon Fraser competed in 30 matches on Saturday and won 29 of them as nine of the Clan's 10 wrestlers went undefeated.
Against Northwest Kansas Tech, the Clan won the first two matches by technical fall before taking two by forfeit.
Gina Carpenter then took her match by decision before Mallory Velte and Bailey Halvorson won by decision.
At 155-pounds, Monika Podgorski won by technical fall before DiStasio and Jenna McLatchey won by forfeit as the Clan swept their first dual of the day.
The Clan won six of the first seven matches in the second dual of the day by technical fall, winning one by forfeit before Oklahoma City's Stephanie Geltmacher handed the Clan their first and only loss of the day at 155 lbs. over Podgorski.
SFU quickly got back on track, with DiStasio and McLatchey winning by technical fall to close out the dual.
In the Clan's final dual of the day against Jamestown, the Clan took the first two matches by forfeit, two by technical fall and six by fall to sweep their three dual meets.
