Burnaby athletes raked in 65 medals in badminton and track and field alone at the B.C. Seniors Games last week.
Local badminton players garnered 38 total medals, including 11 gold, while Burnaby athletes ensured 21 of their 27 total medals were also gold on the track.
Distance runner Herb Phillips was the big winner in the men's 70-to-74 age category, winning four track gold, including the 800, 1,500 and 5,000 metre races, as well as the 10K road race at the Games.
Rose Hare matched Phillips with four firstplace medals in the women's 60-to-64 age class. Hare won the discus, weight throw, javelin and hammer.
George Sojka was also busy, garnering six total medals in the 60-to-64 division, including gold in the 800m. Sojka also earned silvers in the 1,500m, 5,000m, 10K road race and javelin. He also placed third in the hammer throw.
Norm Lesage won two sprint medals in the men's 80-to-84 age group.
Other double-gold winners included Renata Sakamoto in the 800 and 1,500m, Gabriella Moro in the javelin and discus, Debbie Jordan in the middle distances and longdistance runner Debra Colvin.
Gary Leung won the triple jump and placed second in the javelin. Ralph Stanfield also placed first in the men's 75-79 200m sprint.
In badminton, Burnaby players won 19 medals in the competitive divisions, including three gold.
C.K.Chong won the 80-plus men's singles and doubles finals. He also teamed with Doris Wan to take silver in mixed doubles. Wan teamed with Jean Allen for a bronze in women's doubles.
Phil Horton shared the other gold in the 75to79 mixed doubles, while also earning a bronze in doubles.
Ken Leong won a silver in 60-to-64 singles and a bronze in mixed doubles.
Letty Gimenes and Freda Jenkins both won runner-up medals in their respective singles. Gimenes also shared a bronze with Agnes Liu in doubles, while Jenkins teamed with Bob Herar for bronze in mixed doubles. Herar picked up a single medal in men's doubles.
Victor Chow came second and Walter Hallam was third in the 70-to-74 men's doubles. Joelanne Stanfield earned a doubles' silver in the women's age group. Jim Lee also took a bronze in doubles.
In recreational badminton, Bruce Leong and Nasreen Lalani won a pair of gold apiece. Peter Chen, Veronica Sim, Orest Kernycky, Johnson Song and Pong Sim also picked up gold. Other badminton medallists included: Vincent Chai, Anthony Kwan, Albert Lam, Wayne Jang, Cindy Louie, Ken Chan, Agnes Lui and Amina Kassam.
