Fifth-year Douglas College student Charmagne Yeung and 18year-old freshman Nathan Choi were named the PacWest badminton players of the week.

Fifth-year Douglas College student Charmagne Yeung and 18year-old freshman Nathan Choi were named the PacWest badminton players of the week.

Yeung and Choi both won their respective doubles finals at the third PacWest badminton tournament of the season at the Douglas College David Lam campus last weekend.

The pair then teamed up to win the mixed pair as Douglas claimed its third straight tournament aggregate, edging Langara College 141-140 in the individual event finals at the Pinetree venue. In the team event, Douglas won 15 separate matches to beat runner-up Langara 193-161.

Yeung teamed with rookie Laura Tacon in the women's doubles, defeating Ashley Jang and Florina Lau of Langara 21-14, 21-9 in the final.

With Choi, Yeung won her fifth individual title of the year, defeating Jang and Matt Downton of Langara 21-14, 21-19 in the mixed final.

The back-to-back wins stretched Choi's tournament record to a perfect 12 consecutive wins without a loss. Her season record is currently 33-1.

"Charmagne had a fantastic weekend and led the team to victory with her strong play and leadership," said Douglas head coach Al Mawani in a PacWest press release.

Choi was also a perfect 4-0 this weekend, winning both team and individual titles for the Royals.

Choi and doubles partner Wei Luo had an easy time of it in the individual final, sweeping Willis Kwee and Andy Wong of Kwantlen 21-8 and 21-14.

Their toughest match was in the semifinals, outlasting Langara pair Hugh Leong and Shurman Chan 21-17, 21-17.

The twin titles was the fifth for Choi this season. His season record improved to 34-1.

"Nathan has a lot of skill and is very good at analyzing the opponents," said Mawani. "He has the potential to represent Canada one day if he keeps working at his game."

In the individual singles finals, Luo and Tacon settled for second place.

Luo lost in the men's singles to Jason Sun of Langara. Tacon placed behind Melissa Liew of Vancouver Island University in the women's singles A final. Amy Leung of Douglas placed third in the women's singles.

In men's B doubles, Charles Panizales and Mark Chang of Douglas placed second overall.

Leung and Chang also teamed for second in the mixed B doubles.

In the C events, Darren Cho of Douglas won the men's singles.

After three tournaments, Douglas leads with an aggregate score of 1,047 points, which almost clinches an eighth consecutive provincial championship for the New Westminster program.

The PacWest championships will take place at the Pinetree campus on Feb. 16 and 17.
