Burnaby Winter Club products Mathew Barzal and Dante Fabbro were among 32 players invited to attend the national junior hockey team selection camp, Dec. 10 to 14 in Blainville, Que.
Barzal, who was drafted 16th overall in the 2015 NHL draft by the New York Islanders, played for Canada at last year’s under-20 tournament.
The 19-year-old centre rejoined the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds recently after starting the year with the Islanders, and has posted a goal and 10 assists over the past three weeks.
New Westminster-born Fabbro captained the BWC's bantam team in 2013 and spent the past two seasons in Penticton of the B.C. Hockey League, was one of 10 defencemen invited. The 17th player chosen in the 2016 NHL draft, by the Nashville Predators, skated for Canada this past summer with the under-18 national team. A freshman at Boston University, Fabbro has scored three times and set up three others over 12 games.
This year's World junior hockey championships are in Toronto and Montreal, Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, 2017.
