B.C. baseball and soccer teams all medalled on the final day of competition at the Western Canada Summer Games.
The girls’ soccer team, including Burnaby representatives 14-year-old Janika Sangha and Kaela Danielle Mercado Hansen, 15, helped Team B.C. to the gold medal following a 3-1 victory over Manitoba at the Wood Buffalo, Alta. Games on Sunday.
B.C. shut out both Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan in earlier Pool A matches.
The boys’ baseball team, including 15-year-old Niko Millas and Cole Dalla-Zanna, 16, of Burnaby, shared gold with the B.C. squad with a 7-3 victory over Saskatchewan.
B.C. topped the standings with a 5-1 record at the Games.
The team’s only loss was a 6-5 defeat to Alberta in round-robin play. B.C. avenged that loss later in the competition with a 7-4 win.
B.C.’s boys’ soccer team settled for silver medal after a 1-0 loss to Alberta in the championship final on Sunday.
B.C., including Burnaby’s Gurinder Nijjar and Brady Hughes, was perfect in pool play, blanking both Saskatchewan and Yukon in Pool B.
Earlier, Burnaby Special Olympians also made their mark at the Western Canada Games.
April Armstrong, 22, won three silver medals in track and field, placing runner-up in the women’s 100 and 200 metres, and long jump.
Daniel Batson also won a pair of second-place medals in the sprints.
The 22-year-old Batson earned silver medals in the men’s 100 and 200m races.
B.C. topped the medal count with 280 total medals, including 134 gold.
Alberta was in second place with 226 medals.
