Braves sweep Island tour

Burnaby goes 4-0 by beating Cowichan, Nanaimo

A long ferry ride home gave the Burnaby bantam AAA Braves a chance to savour a sweep of the Cowichan Valley Mustangs to wrap up a successful two-day Island tour.

Burnaby completed the trip Sunday with back-to-back 7-5 wins over the Mustangs, after taking two the day before from Nanaimo.

Seven of the team’s 10 players recorded two hits on Sunday, with the Braves beginning the run by rallying with a two-run double from Daniel Martin to take Game 1.

Williams Camacho-Soto retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced in relief to pick up the win.

Burnaby would have to come from behind again by scoring six runs on a series of clutch hits.

Lucas Grant, Evan Hoegler and Jonny Servidad knocked in runs and two more scored on a throwing error to complete the offence. Picking up the win was Martin, who shook off a rough start to go 6-2/3 innings to improve to 2-0.

A day earlier in Nanaimo, the Braves climbed back to .500 by winning both games, 4-2 and 6-2.

Sam Van Snellenberg proved Chris Sale-sharp in the opener with a complete-game two hitter, fanning 13 batters.

Michael Briglio drove in two runs.

In the nightcap, Grant’s two-out single cashed in the decisive run, with Hoegler collecting the win.
