Burnaby athlete misses Olympic javelin qualification

Burnaby's lone Olympian, Curtis Moss, failed to move on to the final of the men's javelin at the London Games on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Burnaby resident threw the javelin 78.22 metres in the qualifying round at the Games on Wednesday, finishing 13th in Group A and 22nd overall.

The top-12 qualifiers, including Czech Republic's Vitezslav Vesely who topped the field with a personal-best throw of 88.34m, moved on to Friday's final.

The top dozen throwers also included two of the sport's all-time best. Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen, who has a personal-best throw of 91.59m and set the current Olympic record with a 90.57m throw at the Beijing Games in 2008, topped Group A with an 84.47m toss.

Tero Pitkamaki of Finland, who has the thrown the seventh furthest javelin all-time at 91.53m, qualified third overall in London at 83.01m.

Julius Yego of Kenya set a national record with a throw of 81.81m to qualify for the finals in ninth place.

Moss made the Canadian Olympic team with a personal-best qualifying throw of 81.21m earlier this year.
