Burnaby athlete named to men's national team

Canada's national men's field hockey team is off to the World League semifinals in June

Burnaby’s Gabriel Ho-Garcia will be looking to pick up his 50th career cap for Canada at the World League men’s field hockey semifinals in Argentina next month.

Ho-Garcia was one of 18 athletes named to the Canadian national team touring roster for the Olympic Games qualification competition in Buenos Aires from June 3 to 14.

Also on the roster is New Westminster’s Brenden Bissett, who will be looking for his 23rd representative cap with the national team.

The top-three finishers at the World League semifinals will earn spot at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

With its recent win against Russia and the third-place finish at World League 2 in Malaysia, Canada ensured itself two opportunities to qualify for the Summer Games. The other chance for Canada is to win a gold medal at the Pan American Games to be held in Toronto later this summer.

In Buenos Aires, Canada is grouped with Austria, Germany, Spain and the host Argentinians in the 10-team tournament. Pool B consists of Egypt, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Canada’s opening match at the World League semis is against Spain on June 3.
