Burnaby-based centre of excellence up to the challenge

B.C. Centre of Excellence skaters had some strong showings at the Skate Canada Challenge in Regina last week.

Simon Fraser University student Jeremy Ten led a B.C. podium sweep in the senior men's division, winning the competition with a super free skate.

Ten, who led after the short program, added to his lead with 125.35 points in the free skate to finish with a first-place total of 184.53 points.

B.C.'s Liam Firus was second with 170.32 points, while last year's Canadian junior champion Nam Nguyen of Burnaby placed third with 163.62 points.

Burnaby's Nicole Orford and partner Thomas Williams were the runners-up in the senior dance competition won by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Central Ontario.

Burnaby also figured well in junior dance.

Madeline Edwards and Zhao Kai Pang of Burnaby and Noa Bruser and Burnaby's Timothy Lum placed second and third, respectively in the junior dance at the Challenge.

Edwards and Pang finished just behind a pair of Quebec skaters with 124.87 points. Bruser and Lum were right behind with a 122.28 total.

Burnaby's Caelen Dalmer and partner Shane Firus placed seventh in the junior dance.

In the novice dance competition, B.C.'s Jessica Jiang and Nikolas Wamsteeker finished in third place less than two points behind the winning Quebec skaters.

B.C. dominated the novice women's division with Jayda Jurome and Cailey England finishing first and second, respectively. Jurome garnered a 111.35 score to England's 102.12 total.

Haley Sales and Larkyn Austman also made the novice top 10, placing a respective eighth and 10th overall.

Adonis Wong of Burnaby led a trio of novice boys into the top 10. Wong placed seventh overall just ahead of provincial teammates Tyler Miller and Shawn Cuevas.

In the pre-novice skate, Danielle Wu and Spencer Soo were third in the dance competition, while Alexa Linden and Shane Garland placed 10th.

Julianne Delaurier won the women's event and Kelsey Wong took third, while Monika Randall finished in ninth place.

In the men's skate, Travis Winn finished just off the podium in fourth, while Alexander Lawrence was seventh and Ajax Wong came in 10th spot.
