Burnaby-based N.W. Giants move into share of top spot

The Northwest Giants neared the end of the fall half of the season tied with the Cariboo Cougars for top spot following a three-point weekend against the Thompson Blazers.

The Giants drew 1-1 on Adam Helewka's game-tying second period goal in Chase on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Burnaby forward again led the Giants with two goals and a single helper in the Giants' 6-2 win.

The three-point night lifted Helewka into first place in team scoring with 23 points, including 13 goals.

The victory gave the 12-3-5 Burnaby Winter Club-based club 29 points, tying them with the Cougars for first place.

Josh Thrower also had three points, including a goal, in the Sunday win. Taylor Tanti and Joseph Carvalho of Burnaby both had a goal and a single helper.

The Giants and Cougars are followed closely by the Northeast Chiefs in third place with 28 points and the Greater Vancouver Canadians with 26 points.

The Valley West Hawks and Okanagan Rockets are not far off with 22 and 21 points, respectively.

The Giants finish the fall season at the winter club with a two-game set against the 10th-place South Island Thunderbirds.

The opening game will take place at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, with the rematch Sunday morning, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
