Burnaby based St. Thomas More Knights beat Centennial 37-6

Not that the St. Thomas More Knights need any more heroes, but Sebastian Adugalski made his voice heard on Friday night.

Not that the St. Thomas More Knights need any more heroes, but Sebastian Adugalski made his voice heard on Friday night.

Adugalski ran for 112 yards and set up his squad for two touchdowns from Kyle Madden and one from Justin Siglos as the Knights beat Centennial 37-6 and consolidated their number-1 provincial ranking with their fifth straight win this season.

Adugalski is part of a talented Knights backfield that also includes Elliot Nelson and an injured Marwin Empainado and head coach Bernie Kully never knows which one will shine brightest each week.

"Sebastian ran the ball really nicely," said Kully. "He ran hard, finished his runs and kept the chains moving. He looked and played the part of a feature back."

But the stars of the team continue to be Madden and quarterback Mikey Carney, who have great numbers that don't even tell the true story of their leadership.

Madden had a team-leading 15 tackles from the middle linebacker spot and had 111 combined rushing and receiving yards. Carney passed for 217 yards and two touchdowns, while contributing six tackles and an interception on defence.

"He was his usual steady self," said Kully of Carney. "He contributed in all three phases of the game- He does so many things well and makes them seem easy while he does it. He is a true leader."

Kully said Madden and Carney set an example that their teammates can't help but follow.

"They've been the leaders of our team for the better part of two years. They've got a good football IQ, they set a great tone," said Kully. "The two of them, and in fact, the rest of our team, they're just so mature, so professional."

Kully said he's had fellow teachers tell him that this year's squad has shown a new level of professionalism and maturity and he doesn't believe the number-1 ranking will get to their heads.

"I think this group gets it," said Kully. "The rankings, it is what it is, but for this team, it's about coming to practice, working hard and focusing on the right things that will allow us to continue winning."

In fact, when the team had to come in for a run and film work on the Thanksgiving Monday, the players embraced the challenge and the result of their efforts was on full display Friday night in Coquitlam.

Other notable Knights included Siglos, who finished with 86 yards receiving, Alex Golding, who had six tackles including a sack, and a touchdown, and brother Aidan Golding, who had eight tackles, including two sacks.
