Burnaby bats threw their full weight behind the North Shore Twins.
The Twins caught fire in the final days of the B.C. Premier Baseball League playoffs, sinking both the Nanaimo Pirates and grounding the Victoria Eagles en route to the provincial title in Victoria on Aug. 2.
North Shore won the B.C. premier midget boys’ title following an 18-7 mercy-rule victory over the Pirates.
The bulk of the runs came in a 13-run third inning for the Twins.
Burnaby catcher Nicholas Favaro had one hit and knocked in a run, while scoring four times.
Infielder Steve Moretto hit safely in two of three at-bats, while crossing the plate three times for the Twins.
Outfielder Nicholas Carusi also registered two hits, including a double and one run batted in, while scoring a single run for the provincial champs.
After mustering just six hits in an opening 6-5 loss to the Okanagan A’s, the Twins came alive at the plate, exploding for 52 runs on 38 hits in their next three games – all settled by the mercy rule.
Moretto, a Notre Dame Regional school student, capped the onslaught with seven hits in 10 at-bats to finish the tournament with a fourth-best overall .471 batting average, including a provincial-high 10 runs scored.
Favaro, a St. Thomas More Collegiate student, and Carusi from Notre Dame, both finished the competition tied for third overall with six RBIs apiece.
Favaro hit .389 at the provincials, garnering seven hits and scoring seven runs.
Carusi scored nine runs and recorded five hits for the North Shore club at the provincials.
North Shore caught fire with a 22-4 win over Nanaimo on Aug. 1, pounding the Pirates for 11 runs in the opening inning.
The Twins outhit the Pirates16-7, including three home runs in the contest.
Moretto helped lead the way with three runs on two hits, while Favaro batted in a pair of runs on two hits, while also scoring two runs.
Carusi also had a pair of hits and two RBI.
North Shore advanced to the PBL final with a 12-2 victory over Victoria later in the day.
Against the Eagles, Moretto drove in three runs on three hits, while scoring twice.
Carusi scored three runs, with two runs and two RBI in the win. Favaro drove in a run with a two-base hit.
Morretto is currently playing with the B.C. all-star team at the under-17 Canada Cup championships in Saskatoon.
The Baseball Canada competition runs until Aug. 10.
