The Simon Fraser University track and field team competed in their final two competitions prior to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor championships against some stiff NCAA division I competition this past weekend.

Three SFU women ran the 800 metres in times better than the NCAA standard but will be ineligible for the nationals because of SFU's provisional status.

Lindsey Butterworth was timed in 2:11.03, while Sarah Sawatzky ran a 2:11.50 and Michaela Kane was clocked in 2:12.33.

Those times rank first, second and third, respectively, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this winter.

SFU's Ryan Brockerville also ran a conference-best time of 8:20.44 in the men's 3,000m competition.

On Sunday, Kane placed in sixth place in the 600m in a time of 1:34.27, while Butterworth won the women's 1000m in 2:54.71.

The Clan is turning its attention to this weekend's indoor conference championships in Idaho.

The Clan will enter distance medley relay teams in both the men's and women's competitions. Both are ranked first overall.

On the men's side, Keir Forster and Brockerville will represent the SFU in the mile race. Brockerville enters the competition ranked first.

Seniors Adam Reid and Yubai Liu have also qualified and will compete in the 800m, along with freshman Stuart Ellenwood in his first conference championship. Ellenwood will also run in the 400m race.

Five freshman will compete in addition to Ellenwood as Anton Humeniuk will take part in the 3000m, Jacob Karamanian in the high jump, Luca Molinari in the weight throw, Leah Regan in the mile and Aisha Klippenstein in the triple jump. Klippenstein will also take part in the hurdles along with senior Andrea Abrams.

Dennis Nicholas will take part in the 60-metre and long jump competitions.

The Great Northwest indoor championships will take place on Friday and Saturday in Nampa, Idahoi.
