Burnaby Clan wrestlers qualify for NWCA National Tournament

The Simon Fraser University qualified its entire men's wrestling team at the National Collegiate association West Regional championships on Saturday at San Jose State University.

The Simon Fraser University qualified its entire men's wrestling team at the National Collegiate association West Regional championships on Saturday at San Jose State University.

All 12 Clan wrestlers placed in the top three, qualifying all of them for the national championship tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida, beginning March 8.

Leading the way for the Clan were seniors Max Arcand of Burnaby and Manvir Sahota along with sophomore Arjun Gill, who all captured gold.

Arcand won his third tournament of the year, defeating teammate Brock Lamb in the final at 165 pounds.

Both Sahota at 197 lb. and Gill at 235 lb. defeated Cal Baptist wrestlers in the finals. Neither Gill nor Sahota surrendered a takedown in the tournament and Gill defeated all his opponents by major decisions.

Placing second for the Clan were Skylor Davis at 125 pounds, Alex Stemer at 149, Burnaby's Cody Coombes at 157, Clete Hanson at 184, Gurjot Kooner at 285 and Lamb at 165.

Rounding out the qualifiers were J.J. Lum at 133 lbs. and Pardeep Rekhi at 197 lbs. Both wrestlers finished the tourney in third place with 3-1 records.

SFU finished second in the region behind Cal Baptist University.

It is SFU's first year competing in the NCWA after more than 30 seasons in the NAIA.
