Zion Corrales-Nelson was a big winner for the Burnaby Striders at the recent Fraser Valley high school invitational track and field meet.

Corrales-Nelson won three sprinting events in the 14-year-old girls' division, placing first in the 100, 200 and 400 metres at Bear Creek Park in Surrey on April 28.

Corrales-Nelson won the sprint final in a time of 13.25. She also placed first in the 200m final in 26.53, almost a second-anda-half of the second-place finisher.

But the most convincing win came in the metric quarter-mile, where Corrales-Nelson eclipsed the competition, finishing five seconds ahead of the runner-up runner in a winning time of 1: 00.45.

Sophia Stevenson also fared well for the Striders on the track, winning two middle-distance races in the 15-to-16 girls' group.

Stevenson won the 800m in a time of 2: 21.49 and the 1,500m in 5: 59.62.

Middle-distance runner Natasha Louie also reached the podium for Burnaby.

Louie was second in the 14-year-old girls' metric mile and third in the 800m.

Marco Sherwood placed third in the boys' long jump. Sherwood also did well on the track, finishing fifth in the 100m and seventh in the 200m.

Caitlin Louie had a best fourth-place effort in the 200m. Darian Louie was fifth in the 400m and sixth in the 200m. Hyunsoo Kanyamuna was sixth in the 400m. Gabrielle Garri also competed in the girls' sprints.

The Striders will likely take part in the annual NorWester's elementary schools meet at Swangard Saturday and Sunday.
