Burnaby defenceman Karl Alzner signed on for another two years with the Washington Capitals on July 17.

Last season, Alzner, 22, completed his first full season in the NHL, garnering two goals and 10 assists, and a plus-14.

His 132 blocked shots were third on the team, while his 98 hits were tied for seventh.

Alzner is reported to make $1.285 million in each of the next two seasons.

"We are pleased to have re-signed Karl Alzner to a two-year contract," said Washington vice-president and general manager George McPhee in an online club press release. "We feel he's an important part of our defensive core who logs critical minutes against other teams' top players."

Alzner ranked sixth on the team in average ice time. The Burnaby Winter Club product spent three seasons in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears, compiling a plus-57 rating while also helping the Cap's AAA affiliate win a league-topping 11th Calder Cup in 2010.
