Burnaby defenceman tops all rookie hockey players in NCAA

University of Denver defenceman Joey LaLeggia of Burnaby was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association defensive player of the week on Jan. 17.

The Burnaby native recorded five points and a plus-2 rating, while dishing out six hits and stopping two shots on goals in a weekend sweep over Bemidji State last week.

LaLeggia scored a go-ahead goal and had one assist in a 6-3 win over Bemidji on Jan. 13. He also figured in on all three of Denver's goals in a comeback 3-2 win over BSU.

LaLeggia leads all NCAA Division I rookie defencemen with 24 points, including a nation-best nine goals and 15 assists.

He is currently on a six-game points-scoring streak. LaLeggia currently ranks second among WCHA blueliners in goals and is third in total points.

A good start

Burnaby defenceman Al Mazur garned a pair of assists in his first game with the Ontario Reign of the East Coast Hockey League.

Mazur signed a pro contract with the Reign on Jan. 21. He then went out and helped the Reign post a 4-2 win over the Colorado Eagles on the same day.

Third star by Thunder

Brown University grad Jesse Fratkin was named a third star for the Stockton Thunder in a 7-5 victory over Las Vegas in ECHL play on Saturday.

Fratkin's goals were his seventh and eighth of the season, placing him sixth in team scoring.

Two-point outing

Dustin Mowrey of Burnaby scored a goal in a two-point outing for Cornell University in East Coast university hockey on Jan. 20.

Mowrey's third tally of the year helped the ninth-ranked school team to a 4-3 win in overtime over Dartmouth.

Third of the season

University of Connecticut senior Marcello Ranallo scored his third goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to Robert Morris in Atlantic Hockey Association play Saturday.
