Burnaby golfers close to leaders at B.C. junior

Zone 4 boys win four-person team competition by six strokes

Burnaby golfers finished among the top 12 at the B.C. junior boys’ and girls’ golf championships this weekend.

Kevin Li and Alex Francois of Burnaby placed in 10th and 11th place, respectively in the junior boys’ championships in Osoyoos, while Sumi Francois finished in 12th place overall at the junior girls’ tournament in Cordova Bay on Vancouver Island.

Li nipped Francois by a single stroke in the four-round competition at the Osoyoos Golf Club in Park Meadows last Friday.

Li carded a one-under-par 71 on the final day to finish with a two-under total of 286 to finish alone in 10th spot. Francois was one shot back with 287 after a par 72 in the final round.

Both Shaughnessey Golf club members opened with identical opening round 76s.

Edward Chen of Burnaby finished back in the pack at 304. Marcus Rayner of Burnaby failed to make the cut.

Dewdney golfer Jake Scarrow overcame a five-stroke deficit to win the B.C. junior boys' title with a three-under 69 on the final day.

Scarrow finished with a 13-under 275, beating Zaahidali Nathu of Richmond by two strokes after the second- and third-round leader finished the day with a four-over-par 76.

Scarrow, who will enter the University of Idaho as a freshman fired a course-record nine-under 63 on Day 3 to put himself in contention.

Nathu would finish at 11-under-par, while Callum Davison of Duncan placed third one shot back at 278.

Scarrow, Nathu and Davison will represent B.C. at the Canadian junior boys’ championships at Summerlea Golf & Country Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. from August 3 to 6.
In the two-man Best Ball Competition, Harry Bains and Scarrow, at (-32) 256, won the title by three strokes over the team of Henry Lee and Daniel Sun, who finished at (-29) 259. Receiving the bronze medals were Gavin Ciulla and Jaewook Lee, who finished at (-28) 260.
In the four-person zone team competition, the Zone 4 Lower Mainland team of Roy Kang, Sy Lovan, Diego San Pedro and Francois overcame a three-stroke, first-round deficit to shoot 12-under for the day and win the competition by six strokes over the Zone 3 Fraser Valley team of Khan Lee, AJ Ewart, Henry Lee and Mitchell Thiessen. Zone 4 finished the 36-hole competition with a 10-under score of 422, while Zone 3 finished at 424.

In the junior girls’ championship, Michelle Kim of Surrey survived a second-round 78 to win by nine strokes over runner-up Akari Hayashi of Victoria.

The 17-yar-old Kim shot a four-under-par 288, which included a pair of 69s on the par-72 Cordova Bay Golf Course, to win the junior title a week after taking top spot at the B.C. women’s amateur championships.

Francois finished with a 14-over-par 306 total after back-to-back 75s on the final two days of competition on the par-73 layout.
