Atzin San Roman of Burnaby won the provincial novice vault final at the Western Canadian artistic gymnastics championships in Langley.

Atzin scored a Level 5-winning 13.450 points on the vault to take the individual gold medal at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday.

Atzin qualified for the vault and two other event finals following a fourth-place finish in the all-around. Her total score of 51.200 was just a fraction off the podium behind overall winner Matea Vives of Saskatchewan and B.C. teammates Makaila Lapointe and Brianna Henshaw.

Atzin, a Phoenix club gymnast, was runner-up on the balance beam, sixth on floor exercises and tied for seventh on vault in the all-around.

Atzin placed fifth on both the beam and floor in the event finals. She scored 12.150 on beam, while finishing with a 13.050 score on floor as one of five B.C. gymnasts finishing the event amongst the top seven.

Atzin's medal-winning performances helped B.C. take the provincial novice girls' team title over runner-up Alberta, including combined wins on floor and beam.

Sister Itzia San Roman placed 16th in the national open girls' all around, including a personal best third-place finish on floor.

Itzia's 13.650 score was just behind first-and second-place B.C. teammates Taylor Chan and Taylor Oakley, respectively.

In the floor event final, Itzia finished sixth with a 13.250 score.

Chan and Oakley placed onetwo in the floor event finals.

The Western Canadian championships help identify future high-performance athletes and prepare them for competitions such as national championships and Western and Canada Summer Games.
