Stewart gave up a shorthanded goal to Readings' Matt Caruana midway through the first period but was perfect the rest of the way in a 4-1 win for the Elmira Jackals on March 3.

The 6-4 Stewart currently sports a 0.914 save percentage - sixth best in the East Coast league.

Playoff Flame on fire

New Westminster's Marco Ballarin was named the first star, leading the Ridge Meadows Flames to a 5-2 win over the Aldergrove Kodiaks in Pacific International Junior Hockey League playoff action on March 2.

Ballarin opened scoring with a shorthanded marker in the first period. He also chipped in with an assist on the Flames' second goal.

Ridge Meadows currently trails Aldergrove 2-1 in first-round playoffs.

Big help to Denver U

Joey LaLeggia helped out the University of Denver to a weekend sweep over Nebraska Omaha in Western Collegiate hockey league play.

LaLeggia garnered his conference-high 26th assist of the season in Denver's 3-0 win on Friday.

The former Burnaby Winter Club

defenceman leads all rookies and blueliners in scoring with 11 goals and 37 points.

LaLeggia leads Denver with 11 goals on 60 shots for a 0.183 shot percentage. He is also second on the team with a plus-16.

Waiting on a winner

The Northwest Giants finished in first place in the B.C. major midget hockey league and will enjoy a first-round playoff bye this week.

The Giants posted their fifth consecutive winning season in the 11-team major midget loop, finishing six points ahead of north B.C. rival and league runner-up Cariboo Cougars. Both teams earned firstround playoff byes.

In quarter-final action, sixth-place Valley West Hawks take on the third-place Northeast Chiefs.

The Greater Vancouver Canadians and Okangan Rockets tangle in the other quarter-final.

The Giants will take on the winner of the lowest seeded team in the best-of-three semifinal.

Adam Helewka of Burnaby led the Giants in overall scoring in the regular season with 24 goals and 29 assists.

Jarid Lukosevicius and Mitch Crisanti also posted 20-goal seasons for the Giants.

On defence, Burnaby's Joseph Carvalho finished tied for second place in blueline scoring with six goals and 29 total points.

Josh Thrower tied for the lead in goals for defencemen with 11 markers.
