Burnaby hockey clubs lose playoff series

The junior B Grandview Steelers fall in five to North Vancouver, while SFU club loses both games to three-time winner Selkirk College in Intercollegiate final

The Grandview Steelers playoff run came to an end on Friday the 13th.

The junior B Steelers lost Game 5 of their best-of-seven Pacific Junior Hockey League conference final 6-2 to the regular season champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack at the Harry Jerome rec centre.

The loss eliminated Grandview, which won the opening game of the playoff final 6-3 in North Van, from the playoffs.

Peter Matthews and Timothy Chow, with his league-leading 12th goal of the playoffs, both scored for Grandview in the final game against North Van.

Chow is currently tied for second in overall playoff scoring with 17 total points.

Trailing 3-2 heading into the third period, Grandview gave up three unanswered goals to the Wolf Pack, who took the playoff series 4-1.

Cole MacInnes took the loss in the Steelers’ net, ending the playoffs with a 2.52 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.

North Vancouver will take on the Mission Outlaws in the PJHL final.

Clan hockey club lose college final

Simon Fraser University met a similar fate in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League playoff final.

The Clan club dropped a pair of games in its best-of-three playoff final with Selkirk College at the Castlegar rec centre last weekend.

The back-to-back wins gave Selkirk its third consecutive B.C. Intercollegiate title.

Selkirk opened with a 3-1 win over SFU. Graham Smerek scored the lone goal for the Clan midway through the third period on March 13.

The following night, Selkirk swept the series with a 4-2 win at home.

Jared Eng tied the contest 1-1 early in the second period, but Selkirk finished the frame with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart.

Adam Callegari tallied a late goal in the final minute of the game to make it close.

Jordan Liem took the loss for SFU in both playoff games.
