Burnaby independent girls win at Western Canada age class meet

St. Thomas More Collegiate won both the cadet and schoolgirl divisions at the Western Canada age class wrestling championships in Kamloops last weekend. The Knight girls also placed second overall in the juvenile age class.

STM girls dominated the cadet division, posting 32 total points to beat co-runners-up Dover Bay and Alberni by 15 points.

Nicole Depa and Anna Benevoli were individual champions at 56 and 65 kilograms, respectively. Meagan Chow placed third at 40 kg.

Ivana Baker, Livleen Sidhu, Tessa Patterson and Christina Fernandes also picked up top-6 points for the cadet Knights.

STM was nearly as dominant in the schoolgirl category, beating second-place Phoenix Middle school 26-20 in overall team points.

Natalie Nelson was the overall winner at 59 kg, while teammates Alina Mercado and Izabella Molnar were third and fourth, respectively, in the same weight class.

Ciara Corbett was second and Alana Bates, third, at 49 kg. Vanessa Lloyd placed third at 45 kg.

The Knights juvenile girls finished in second place overall behind host Norkam.

Clariss Dos Santos won the juvenile girls' title at 49 kg. Aryana Ebrahimzadeh was third at 52 kg. Daniella Falcone also placed fourth at 49 kg.

On the boys' side, juvenile Knight Matt Evans was second at 115 kg. Justin Siglos and Sean Moroziuk also earned placement points in the 54-kg category.

In the cadet class, Eric Bauer was second at 63 kg, Kevin Marshall was runner-up at 80 kg, and Rafal Posypanko also took silver at 130 kg for the third-place STM team.

Nathaniel Punzo, Darthe Capellan, Malcom Yung, Ryan Rickaby and Sam Candolfi were also point-getters for the STM cadet boys.

STM's schoolboy team finished in fourth place behind division winner Cochrane, Alta. and runner-up Maple Ridge.

Carlo Malsegna placed second at 57 kg, while Kyle Berry, Ethan Pagnottaro, Ivan Calderon and Josh Apolinario all finished third in their respective weight classes.

Landon Jackson, Mac Frinfinnson, Ryan Matkovic and Kyle Berry also picked up points for the first-years.
