The former Colorado Avalanche captain and two-time Stanley Cup winner was nominated in his first year of eligibility.

Sakic played his entire 20-year NHL career with one franchise, beginning in Quebec City with the Nordiques. The franchise was later moved to Colorado, where Sakic skippered the Avs to the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001.

The Burnaby Minor product garnered 1,641 points in 1,378 games. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Stanley Cup MVP in '96.

In 2001, Sakic ran the table, following up his second NHL championship title with the Hart Trophy, Lady Byng Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award, now renamed the Ted Lindsay Award.

Internationally, Sakic also served his country well, earning gold medals for Canada at the 1988 World junior championships, the 1994 world championships, 2002 Olympic Games and the 2004 World Cup.
