Burnaby Lake holds on to first place

Burnaby Lake Rugby Club managed to hold on to first place in the Canadian Direct Premier League, despite losing 16-23 against the Castaway Wanderers Saturday.

Head coach Kris de Scossa said the team played well given the conditions, which were less than appealing.

"There were some very extreme weather conditions," he said. "We had hail stones, blistering rain, it was pretty shocking."

But it wasn't only the weather that was wild, Burnaby Lake and the Castaways played a heated game, both fighting for the lead at several points in the game.

"It was a good contest and right until the end it was (neck and neck)," he said.

For much of the game the leading score went back and forth between the two premier teams, until the Castaways got the chance they needed to make a try and push ahead of Burnaby.

"We were leading and then 15 minutes to go and they leveled and had a great opportunistic try to win the game," he said.

De Scossa hopes his team will finish off the season strong before heading into playoffs. Burnaby plays its last regular season game at home this Saturday at 2:45 p.m. against last place Bayside AA at Burnaby Lake Park.
