The Lakers opened the 2012 premier league schedule with an emphatic 25-0 victory over last year's Lower Mainland champion Capilano RFC on Saturday.
The win was a dramatic turnaround from a 20-11 loss to the same North Shore club in the final of the Miller Cup in December of 2011.
Burnaby opened the rematch at Capilano's home ground at Klahanie Park in convincing fashion, getting a early try from fullback Cole Macqueen and a penalty goal from Geoff Ryan to put the visitors up by 8-0.
The Lakers scored again from Evan Thomas, who finished off a tap penalty. Ryan converted the score to give Burnaby a 15-0 lead at the interval.
The Burnaby club kept up the pressure in the second half, going ahead 18-0 on Ryan's second penalty of the match.
Fly half Adam Martin finished off the scoring for the double blue with the game's third try. Ryan was again good with the conversion.
"I don't think (Capilano) underestimated us, but I have to say we had a few of the bounces go our way. We have been seen as the underdogs in this competition and that was evident in the preseason coaches poll," Burnaby Lake head coach Kris De Scossa said of the team's No. 5 ranking in a B.C. Rugby press release.
The win gave Burnaby Lake an unblemished 3-0 record to date, tying the club with unbeaten James Bay, 27-10 winners of Abbotsford last weekend.
The Rounsefell champion Castaway Wanderers edged the University of Victoria 28-27 in a third elite men's match on Saturday.
Burnaby Lake will host UVic in its home opener at Burnaby Lake-East on Saturday. Kickoff is at 2:45 p.m.
The Burnaby Lake first team fell 30-10 to Capilano, while in the third division, Burnaby A defeated the Caps 29-17. Burnaby B lost an exhibition match to Caps B 12-7.
