The Burnaby Lions peewee community football team looked sharp as they went into South Delta and won the annual South Delta Dueck Bowl last weekend.

The young lions played as a complete unit and impressed onlookers as they went 2-0 to win the preseason tournament. Defense and star quarterback B.J. Clarke was the story for the Lions.

The defense did not allow a single point against in the first game versus the South Delta Rams. The hard-hitting Lions shut out the Rams 13-0, while not allowing the South Delta team a single first down. Clarke scored one rushing touchdown and threw for another to Zachery Northgraves to lead the team to victory.

In the second game, the defense again stood its ground and did not give up a point. Clarke and running back Nick Belmonte led the team to a 6-0 victory over a much tougher Cloverdale Links team. Clarke ripped off two runs over 60 yards and was the runaway MVP for the Lions.

"I could not be more proud of these kids and the coaching staff. Last year they went 0-12, which can be tough. This year we've come together in a very short time. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but it was great to see them get this win," said Burnaby head coach Mike Leland.

The Burnaby Lions are still recruiting players at the atom and bantam level. For more information, visit www.burnabyfootball.com, or call Mike at 604-375-4042, or email [email protected].
