Burnaby Minor wins atom gold group hockey banner

The Burnaby Minor C3 hockey team defeated Seafair 6-3 to win the atom gold group hockey championship at the Richmond Ice Centre on March 10.

The Burnaby Minor C3 hockey team defeated Seafair 6-3 to win the atom gold group hockey championship at the Richmond Ice Centre on March 10.

Nick Young scored three straight goals, including two unassisted markers and a the eventual game-winner from Marcus Jantzen to put Burnaby ahead 4-3 in the middle period.

Ryan Corra, from Aaron Mak, and Young, on an end-to-end rush, gave the visitors an early 2-0 lead.

But Seafair rallied, tying the game 2-2 midway through the second period on a scramble in front of the Burnaby net. Seconds later, the Richmond club took its one-and-only lead after some sloppy Burnaby coverage in their own zone.

Despite the Seafair comeback, goalie Max Shepherd kept Burnaby in the game with some nice saves later in the period.

In the final period, Burnaby came out with more determination. Stefan Deteric gave Burnaby a two-goal advantage, tipping in a Mak pass from the corner.

Connor White then went top shelf to finish off a play set up after some hard work by Goran Viskeruna behind the Seafair net to make the score 6-3.

The playoff banner capped off a thrilling season for the Presidents League regular season champs.
