Burnaby Mountain men win Sr. and Jr. nationals

Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club dominated the men's team aggregate at the junior and senior Canadian championships in Fredericton, N.B. on March 23. The Burnaby Mountain women also garnered a third-place team medal at the senior nationals.

Parm Dhesi led the Burnaby Mountain club to four titles in the junior men's ranks, blanking Alex Thoms of Black Bear by a 10-0 decision in the 96-kilogram final. Dhesi was also unscored upon in the semifinal, defeating Team Impact's Yiannis Narlidis 8-0 to advance to the final.

Dhesi, a freshman at Simon Fraser University, placed fifth in the senior division following a pin by eventual champion and club-mate Manjot Sandhu.

Sandhu defeated Arjun Gill 5-1 in an all-Burnaby Mountain senior final.

Also winning junior gold for Burnaby Mountain were Isaac Bernard, Jasmit Phulka and heavyweight Sunny Dhinsa.

Bernard outpointed Vince De Marinis of YMHA 6-1 in the 60 kg final.

Phulka shut out Nick Proctor of Dinos 3-0 in the final of the men's 84 kg division.

Dhinsa dominated at 120 kg, winning the junior national title 12-0 over clubmate Sean Molle.

Both Molle and Dhinsa recorded shutout wins in their respective semifinal bouts.

Dhinsa beat Tony Legare of KBay 14-0 to advance to the final, while Molle outpointed Burnaby Central Secondary grad Saheel Khan of Bears WC 10-0. Khan finished in fourth place. Dhinsa also earned a silver medal in the senior men's heavyweight class, following a 3-1 defeat to Korey Jarvis of Guelph in the senior final. Dhinsa defeated Patrick Okpalugo of Montreal 2-0 in his semifinal match.

In junior women's division, St. Thomas More Collegiate grad Monica Podgorski won a bronze medal at 72 kg. The SFU freshman finished with a 2-1 record, including a 6-0 win over Kelsey Raab of Salisbury and a 6-3 victory over Kelsey Dayler of Lakehead.

Stacie Anaka won Burnaby Mountain's only senior women's gold medal, taking first place at 67 kg following a 3-0 win over Megan Buydens of Saskatoon. Anaka also won her semifinal 4-1 over Lisa McKibben of Cattown.

Danielle Lappage placed second at 63 kg despite winning three matches by a combined 23-1 score before meeting up with eventual champion Justine Bouchard of Dinos, the overall senior women's aggregate winner. Bouchard outpointed Lappage 8-3 in the final bout.

Justine DiStasio also earned a silver medal, placing runner-up at 72 kg. DiStasio was also dominant in the lead up to the final, winning all her preliminary bouts by a pin. She lost in the final 16-11 to Erica Wiebe of Dinos.

Burnaby Mountain garnered an aggregate total of 45 points in the senior men's category - more than the combined total scores of both runners-up Bears and Brock wrestling clubs.

John Pineda of Burnaby scored similar 12-0 decisions over Michael Asselstine of Bears in the 60 kg men's final and J.F. Godin of Black Bear in the semi. Bernard, the junior champ, placed fifth in the senior division.

Haislan Garcia won at 66 kg, blanking Ryan Weicker of Brock and Brian Hutton of Dinos in his respective final and semi-final bouts.

Former Douglas College student Aso Palani of Bears won at 50 kg with an 11-2 win over Hamilton wrestler Jason Buckle.

Burnaby Mountain's Sukhan Chahal placed fourth in the lightweight division.

Another Burnaby Mountain medallist was Manvir Sahota, who took a bronze medal at 84 kg following a 4-0 win over Jordie Steen of Montreal. Sahota lost his semifinal bout 10-0 to eventual champion Tagziev Tamerlan of Team Impact.

Burnaby's junior men's team doubled runner-up YMHA of Montreal 40-20 in aggregate standings. [email protected]
