The sister act of Alexia and Victoria Seal demonstrated just how the family that wrestles together, wins together.
Alexia walked off as the women's Outstanding Wrestler award winner, while younger sister Victoria carted off the 53-kg crown to lead a strong Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club contingent at the 2019 Junior Canadian championships in Saskatoon two weeks ago.
Along with Serena Woldring, who like Alexia is also a wrestler at Simon Fraser University, they all captured gold medals and national team spots with their results in Saskatoon.
The Seal sisters will compete together on a national team for a second time after representing Canada as cadets in 2016. At the competition two weeks ago in Saskatchewan, Alexia topped the 50-kg final 10-1 over Samantha Adams, while Victoria won the 53-kg gold medal match in dramatic fashion, rallying from a 6-0 deficit with a pin in the second half over York's Bailey Agard.
Woldring, also of Burnaby Mountain and the third-place finisher at the Women's Collegiate Wrestling championships (WCWC) earlier in March, won the 82-kg gold medal with decisions of 12-0, 10-0 and by injury.
BMWC's Paula Godina Gonzalez also collected gold, topping the 62kg division with a win over Guelph's Avery Cameron.
Picking up silver medals were Golrokh Nouri, who finished second to EWC's Vivica Addo in the women's 46kg category, and on the men's side, Karan Singh Dhillon, bethind Saskatoon's Hunter Lee in 86kg, and Harbans Gill, behind Julien Choquette of Vanier, in 92kg. Fellow Burnaby Mountain grappler Sunny Singh Benning placed third in the 92kg category, while Ehsan Hafizi, in 61kg, and Gurjot Gill, in 79 kg, also medalled.
Burnaby wrestlers who finished fourth overall include Flixzl Reyes, in 61kg, Karanpreet Gill, in 74kg, and Connor Pattison, in 86kg.
The Burnaby-based club swept the team titles in both men's and women's divisions.
Alexia placed seventh at the recent WCWC at 109 pounds for SFU.
