Burnaby native Dave Sheldon has a new job.

Sheldon resigned as play-by-play voice of the AHL's Abbotsford Heat after he was offered and accepted the job as CKNW Sportstalk Weekend host.

Sheldon, who first became known to Burnaby NOW readers in 2004 as the colour commentator on Everett Silvertips WHL games, has also been the play-by-play voice of the Chilliwack Bruins and Vancouver Giants.

"It has been a lot of fun to be a part of this from the ground up," Sheldon told the Abbotsford Times about his time with the Heat.

"I'm really going to miss the fans. They're really passionate, they just have to get other people on board."

Sheldon told the Burnaby NOW on July 17 that he expects to begin at CKNW as early as August and he's looking forward to hosting the weekend sports talk show that runs from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Sheldon joined the Heat in the summer of 2009.

Surfing through two years worth of memories, one stood out the most during his tenure in the Heat broadcast booth.

"It has to be Jimmy," he said, referring to former head coach Jim Playfair's viral tirade on referee Jamie Koharski in the second period of a game against the Hamilton Bulldogs on March 27, 2010.

"Two million hits on YouTube can't be wrong."

There were others more closely related to actual hockey.

"The comeback against Rochester in the first round of the playoffs were huge."
