Apr 29, 2013 Burnaby North Defeated by Lord Byng 38 - 5
After four consecutive victories, the Burnaby North Vikings girls' rugby team came out flat against Lord Byng and paid the price, losing 38-5 on April 29.
Despite a strong effort from captain Malak Dalati, North could not get themselves into the game. Byng scored early and often as North failed to find a rhythm on defence or on attack.
The second half started better with North doing a good job maintaining possession. Dalati scored a try in the last two minutes of the match to spoil the shutout.
After a sub-par performance on Monday and a berth in the Tier 1 provincial finals on the line, the Vikings defeated an always tough team from McRoberts, 17-10.
Eager to erase the bad taste of Monday, North came out firing. Forward-of-the-match, Number 8 Shelby Mattin started the charge, getting the momentum going forward that allowed the North girls to work their way down the pitch that ultimately gave scrum half Ruby Moore-Kailia the opportunity to make a blind-side break and score in the right-hand corner.
North was able to pressure the McRoberts midfield all game, causing mistakes and turnovers by the Richmond backs. After some sustained pressure, the McRoberts fullback kicked the ball downfield, only to find North's fullback Hope Hatch field the ball in full stride. Hatch ran the ball back 50 meters to score in the left-hand corner.
The second half saw North maintain the pressure, and from a scrum, back-of-the-match Krya Groll was able to put outside centre Carly Howard into space. Howard broke the defensive line and passed the ball to a speeding Hatch, who added a second try of the match.
McRoberts pressed hard, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes.
With the win, North earned a berth in the Tier 1 provincial finals to be held at the University of British Columbia.
Next up for North is a match versus North hore powerhouse Carson Graham on May 6 at the Lucas Centre in North Vancouver. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
