Burnaby North won its home opener 37 - 0 over Windsor Secondary at the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club on Monday.
Captain Malak Dalati made her debut at scrum half leading the way with strong tackling and effective running that resulted in her scoring three of the team's seven tries.
Malak, who is transitioning from hook to the pivot position, made an impression early on after getting over a few jitters. Starting flyhalf Kyra Groll also had an excellent day directing the Burnaby North attack.
"Both half backs showed good vision today, and when Ruby Moore-Kalia came on at half time for Kyra, we didn't miss a beat. I'm really pleased that we were able to apply some of the lessons we learned in our loss to Carson Graham last week to this weeks game," said North coach Ian Trevor.
Other standouts for North included inside centre Jessica Dupont, and second row forward Shelby Mattin. According to coach Trevor:
"Jessica has a real eye for the gap, and she was able to put her pace and power to good effect today. Her try at the end of the game really showed her potential," said Trevor. "Shelby is a heart-and-soul player, who gives us some real go forward, and she has the ability to put the defence on the back foot. Shelby's two tries today were the result of hard work and effort."
Next week, North has two away games, a league match on Monday against Sutherland in North Vancouver, and an exhibition match on Wednesday versus Surrey's Lord Tweedsmuir.
