Burnaby NOW hockey briefs

Local hockey stars putting up big numbers at home and away from home

The Northwest Giants managed just a single point in their weekend series with the first-place Cariboo Cougars.

The B.C. major midget league Giants drew 2-2 with the Cougars in the opening game, but lost 4-2 to the visiting Prince George club in the rematch last Sunday at the Burnaby Winter Club.

Just Wilson and Desi Burgart scored less than 30 seconds apart in the opening period, but gave up a single counter in each of the next two periods to salvage a single point in the first game of the series.

In the second game, Will Warm and Wilson got the home team off to a strong 2-0 start, but again failed to hold onto the lead, giving up three second-period goals, including the game winner by Colton Thomas, who led the way with a three-point outing.

Lucky Valentine

Burnaby Winter Club product Mathew Barzal was named a third star for the Seattle Thunderbirds in a 3-2 shootout win over Everett in Western Hockey League play last weekend.

Barzal scored the game-tying goal with his 11th of the year and then got the game-winner over the division-leading Silvertips in the shootout on Valentine’s Day.

Third win in goal

Rookie goalie Tavin Grant of Burnaby was named a second star and chalked up his third win of the season for the WHL Prince George Cougars in a 3-2 overtime win over the Red Deer Rebels on Feb. 15.

Former Northwest Giants centre Jansen Harkins also registered two assists to boost his team-high total to 65 points, including 48 helpers, currently third best in the league.

Knocking off No. 1

Tyler Morley of Burnaby led Alaska Fairbanks to a big weekend result against the No. 1-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks in NCAA Division I hockey.

Morley, who is third overall in conference scoring, tied the game on a power play in the second period with his 10th goal of the season in a 1-1 draw in Fairbanks on Feb. 13.

The following night, the Hobey Baker candidate, tallied a pair of third-period goals, including a late empty-netter to give Alaska a 3-1 victory over the Mavs.

Shutout over leader

Andrew Parent was named the B.C. Intercollegiate hockey player of the week, stopping all 24 shots to backstop Simon Fraser University’s hockey club to a 3-0 win over first-place Trinity Western last weekend.

Josh McKissock and Jono Ceci scored first-period goals, while Tyler Basham also tallied in the middle frame for the Clan.

The two teams match up again at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre this Saturday at 7 p.m. SFU closes out the season next Saturday at home against Victoria.

Points keep coming

Joey LaLeggia set up University of Denver teammate Trevor Moore with a perfect cross-ice pass in a come-from-behind 4-3 shootout win over No. 2-ranked North Dakota in NCAA Division I hockey last Saturday.

The senior Burnaby defenceman also scored his 10th goal of the season in an earlier 4-2 loss to North Dakota in the first of a two-game series.

Saving her best

Princeton goalie Kimberly Newell stopped 38 shots to backstop the Tigers to a comeback 4-2 victory over St. Lawrence in NCAA Division I women’s hockey.

Earlier, Newell made 40 saves in a 2-1 loss to No. 8 Clarkson, but still managed to secure a spot for Princeton in the Ivy League playoffs.
