Up-and-coming young hockey players have bright futures ahead of them

New Westminster's Brent Fletcher was one of four University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers named to the Western Collegiate scholar-athlete team.

Fletcher earned a 3.63 grade point average this year and was named to the conference all-academic team for a second straight season.

The sophomore Charger forward played in all 38 games this season, tallying seven points, including a pair of goals.

Fletcher scored Huntsville's first goal of the season against Colorado College.

All-conference junior forward

University of Alaska Fairbanks junior forward Tyler Morley was named to the NCAA Division I Western Collegiate first all-star team.

Morley led Fairbanks in three offensive categories, including 15 goals, 22 assists and a third-best conference 37 total points. He also placed second in the conference with 18 power-play points, third in goals and fifth in assists, while also named twice this season offensive player of the week.

A unanimous all-conference choice

Joey LaLeggia was a unanimous choice on defence for the NCAA Division I National Collegiate all-conference hockey team.

The Edmonton Oilers prospect and Hobey Baker Award candidate was also nominated for conference player of the year, defenceman of the year and offensive defenceman of the year.

The 22-year-old University of Denver blueliner was a NCHA defensive player of the week five times this season and named player of the month for both January and February.

LaLeggia is currently third all-time on the program's defensive scoring list with 127 career points, including 47 goals.

Last weekend, LaLeggia helped Denver complete a quarter-final sweep of No. 6 Minnesota Duluth in opening round playoffs with a goal and two assists in back-to-back wins.

Closing in on 40

Third-year Spokane Chiefs forward Adam Helewka scored his 39th goal of the Western Hockey League season in a 5-3 win over the Portland Winterhawks on March 13. The South Burnaby product added three assists in Spokane's 5-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans on the Saturday to move up to 11th in overall league scoring with 80 total points to date.
