Burnaby Central high school student Briannah Tsang placed eighth in the all-around at a women’s World Cup freestyle gymnastics meet in Germany.
Tsang finished with an all-around score of 50.132, while earning her best marks in her specialty – the vault – with a double-twisting Yurchenko manoeuver at the international competition in Stuttgart on Saturday.
Elizabeth Price of the United States won the event with an overall score of 58.032.
A day earlier, Tsang helped the Canadian team to fifth place overall at the women’s Team Challenge held prior to the World Cup.
Tsang posted the best placement among Canadian team members, finishing sixth in the vault with a 13.950 leap.
Stefanie Merkle of Ontario placed highest in the all-around, following a seventh place on floor and ninth on vault and balance beam.
China edged Germany in the team challenge event.
All-conference
Outside hitter Kelsey Robinson and middle blocker Madeline Hait of Burnaby both received honourable mentions on the Great Northwest all-conference women’s volleyball team.
Robinson led Simon Fraser University with 316 kills, finishing fifth best in the conference.
Hait, a Burnaby Central grad, was second on the Clan with 199 kills, while leading the team with nearly one block per set.
First-ever hat
University of B.C. hockey player Luke Lockhart was named the Canada West conference second star of the week.
The Burnaby Minor product scored the first-ever shorthanded hat trick in conference history in UBC’s 9-2 win over Lethbridge on Nov. 29.
Record setter
Swimmer Nicole Cossey had a record meet at SFU’s Clan Cup International meet last week.
Cossey qualified for the NCAA championships in both freestyle sprint events, including a record-setting 100-metre time of 55.49.
The Innisfail, Alta. talent also had a hand in four other swims that broke Clan Cup standards.
Cossey shared new relay records in the 200 and 400m freestyle and medley relays.
Carmen Nam also qualified for the nationals in the women’s 200m butterfly.
