Who's making headlines in local sports?

Three local hockey products are currently sitting in the top 15 in Western Hockey League scoring.

Connor Rankin, a former Northwest Giants forward, is ninth overall for the Calgary Hitmen with 25 goals and 34 assists.

Just a point behind is Jansen Harkins, another Giants alumnus. The Prince George Cougars centre has 58 points, including a third-best 41 assists.

Burnaby’s Adam Helewka is another point back for the Spokane Chiefs with 26 goals in 44 league games.

Doubling down

Former St. Thomas More Collegiate basketball star Andrew Morris is averaging a near double-double per game in the PacWest for Capilano University.

Morris is second overall in scoring with an average of 21.11 points per game and first in the PacWest in rebounding with 9.67 boards per game.

Burnaby South grad Martin Bogajev, another Capilano Blues player, is eighth in PacWest scoring with 15.08 points a game.

Ace in deck

Sarah Hughes of Burnaby has Capilano University in a share of first place with some big numbers of her own.

The third-year Blues setter currently leads the PacWest with 43 service aces and is 13th overall with 29 blocks.

Left-side teammate Kelsi Boroevich is ninth with 124 kills and 10th with 153 digs for the first-place Blues.

Long service to rowing

Several Burnaby Lake Rowing Club members earned well deserved long service awards from Rowing Canada at the association’s 34th annual awards held in Burnaby last week.

Bruce Ford and Tricia Smith were presented with a 40-year award, while Mike Bagshawe reached the 30-year milestone and Susan Wilkinson, Morris Hutchins and Laris Grikis earned 20-year mentions.

Lauren Wilkinson, a member of Canada’s silver-medal-winning women’s eights was also recognized along with the team’s achievement at the world rowing championships in 2014.
