Former junior A Burnaby Express defenceman, Patrick Wiercioch was added to Canada’s roster for the upcoming world ice hockey championships.

The Ottawa Senators D-man will be making his first appearance on the national team when Canada opens up against Latvia today (Friday) in the Czech Republic.

 

Netball championships

Burnaby Mountain Secondary School will be the venue for the B.C. high school netball championships.

Athletes from seven Burnaby schools will compete at the junior and senior levels for provincial banners on Saturday, May 9.

The competition gets underway at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m.

 

All-conference picks

Simon Fraser University’s Rachel Proctor was named to the NCAA Division II Great Northwest conference women’s softball first team.

The junior outfielder led the team with a .354 batting average and five home runs this season. She also had 45 hits and 25 runs batted in.

Senior pitcher Kelsie Hawkins and shortstop Danielle Raison were second team selections, while freshman second base Taylor Lundrigan was an honourable mention.

 

Chargers place 15th

The Cariboo Hill Chargers returned to the B.C. high school provincial rugby 7s championships for the first time in almost four decades.

The eastside school placed 15th in the 16-team provincial tournament.

St. George’s defeated Shawnigan Lake 20-12 in the banner final.
