Tough day for Burnaby school teams

St. Thomas More failed to reach the B.C. high school AA girls’ provincial soccer finals following a 2-1 loss to Seycove in a match for the final zone qualifying berth at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Wednesday.
Sara Smyth got STM’s lone goal in the opening half.
“We are a really good team but we weren’t our best today,” said STM coach Doug Corbett.

Vikings drop shield
Burnaby North played second fiddle to Argyle in the final for the Lower Mainland AAA boys’ Tier 2 New Zealand Shield rugby banner.
North lost 38-5 to the North Shore champs at Burnaby Lake-East on Wednesday. Chayanne Khodabandeh scored a try for the Burnaby side.

WR picked in draft
Simon Fraser University wide receiver Lemar Durant was selected in the second round, 18th overall, by the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL draft on Tuesday.
Durant was a Great Northwest conference first team selection. In three seasons with the Clan, Durant caught 175 passes for 2,392 yard and 28 touchdowns.

Grad signs contract
SFU alumna Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe signed a one-year pro women’s basketball contract with TSV 1880 Wasserburg in the German Bundesliga.
Raincock-Ekunwe finished last season second in league scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game, and first in rebounding with 12.6 per outing.

Silver at Pan Ams
SFU’s Payten Smith won a silver medal at the junior Pan Am wrestling championships in Havana, Cuba last week. Smith lost to Cuban Mabelquis Perez in the 72-kilogram final.
