Eighth straight for u-18 Canucks

Former Northwest Giants defenceman Dante Fabbro shared in Canada’s eighth consecutive gold medal at the annual Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup under-18 hockey championships in Breclav, Czech Republic, on Aug. 15.

Canada outscored Sweden 7-3 in the championship game after getting by a stubborn Russian team 2-1 in a penalty shootout in the semifinals.

Fabbro, who was one of just two junior A B.C. Hockey League players to make the Team Canada roster, was held pointless in the five-game competition.

The gold medal was Canada’s 11th at the international tournament since 2004.

On the blue line for Canada

Burnaby’s Ivanna Bilic was named to Canada’s national development women’s hockey team for a three-game exhibition series against the United States.

Canada lost the opening game 4-1 to the Americans in Lake Placid, New York, on Wednesday.

Last season, the Bemidji State University senior defender led the nation with 147 blocked shots.

Bilic also paced Bemidji State’s defensemen with 23 points, including five goals and posted three multi-point games. Bilic’s 23 points ranked seventh among the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s top-scoring defensemen and 15th among blueliners nationally. Bilic was a two-time WCHA defensive player of the week honoree and led the team with 18 assists.
